Rich History of Weddings through the Ages at Rippon Lea House
LOVE, DESIRE & RICHES at Rippon Lea House
Exhibition of weddings through the ages until September 30th
After recently creating a Melbourne letterpress invitation suite inspired by Rippon Lea
, I decided to go along and check out the Love, Desire and Riches exhibition currently being held at Rippon Lea house for myself. The exhibition features wedding fashions, accessories and even some scary looking underwear options from the 18th century through to the present. Sumptuous designs from yesteryear sit alongside glorious, handstitched confections from Valentino and our own Australian designers Akira Isogawa, Collette Dinnigan and Mariana Hardwick
The grand estate is a glamorous setting for any wedding, and once you’re in the grounds, it’s easy to forget the bustle of suburban Elsternwick is right outside the gates. The house itself, set in lush grounds complete with ornamental lake, transport you back to the ‘upstairs, downstairs’ days of house parties and ‘dressing’ for dinner – regardless of occasion. Great wedding moments in literature are captured alongside real-life Melbourne love stories – the house is the perfect setting for the eerie wedding banquet of Charles Dickens character, Miss Havisham.
Speaking of great literary moments, don’t forget to trip down to the lake and see the larger-than-life (no really) Mr Darcy on display until the end of the exhibition. For all those Pride and Prejudice fans (and we know who we are), this is of course all about Colin Firth and ‘the Lake Scene’ – because it wasn’t actually in the book!
To be fair, I think they’ve been overkind to the original Colin in the pecs department in this version.
The Google God Of Search Engines demands two blogs per month (two!) I’ll be back soon with more printing pearls… can you count the moments?
